Photo 14: After Office Shoot

I was busy with the wedding preps so I wasn't able to do any shoot for last week. I was determined to catch up though so after our shift last Friday (which was Saturday morning because I work in the night shift), I spent about an hour playing with our club's studio lights and I had an impromptu shoot with some of my officemates.

This is Grace with a 2-light set-up. The key light was a softbox placed on camera right at Grace's side. I used short lighting, since I recently realized that I haven't been doing that lighting technique that much. In case you're not familiar with the term, short lighting is lighting the side of the face that's facing away from the camera or the side of the face that's narrower as seen in the pic (hence "short" lighting). This means that the side of the face nearer to the camera, or the broader side of the face as seen in the pic is in shadow. This is a great lighting technique if you want to make the face of your subject look thinner, or if you want to make a more dramatic effect.

The 2nd light was a kicker light placed at camera left.
I actually didn't have a background to work with so I just killed the ambient light to make it into a black background.

This is a behind the scenes shot of the lighting set-up.
*The kicker light was a makeshift snoot... A brown envelope was wrapped and pinned around the studio light :D

Here's another behind the scenes shot of the lighting set-up :)

Grace's pic wasn't actually what I initially planned on posting for my weekly project. It was supposed to be an editorial pic of Randell at work.

This made me realize that doing editorial portraits is harder than it looks! I thought that it was just taking a picture of a person with a glimpse to his work or life in the background. I think it's an ok pic, but it didn't get the message across that well.

Anyway, I had a few more shots for that morning and you can view them here:
